Shaniko Music Sanctuary Projects

Tygh Valley Bluegrass Jamboree ticket purchases go directly back into bring music to the people. We average 600+ ticket sales each year, and are pushing to double our ticket sales over the next 3 years to benefit rural Oregon Music Education. This year’s festival will be held September 20 - 22, 2024.

From Marty Hansen, South Wasco County School District Music Teacher:

“Thank you so much for your donation! These instruments will serve the district for many years to come and the strings will bring some of our older instruments out of retirement. It’s so good to see more music coming to the area. Thank you again for your donation and interest in the music program! I sincerely appreciate it!”

South Wasco County School District is in the second year of its music program after almost a decade without music. Despite its young age, the program already has an impressive student interest. Marty Hansen, SWCSD music teacher, has been working hard to build brass and string programs into his current general music offering. Shaniko Music Sanctuary has raised and donated $1600 to the Wasco School Music Program, and hopes to help sustain the growing momentum for music in Wasco County.

We ask that you consider donating lightly-used bluegrass instruments to the Tygh Valley Bluegrass Jamboree Lending Library.

Our “Lending Library” program will get instruments into the hands of kids who wouldn’t otherwise get exposure to the bluegrass genre. We are excited to get the program off the ground to introduce youth programs at the Tygh Valley Bluegrass Jamboree in 2024!

The historic Shaniko chapel boasts a rich history its life began in 1897 as a single-room schoolhouse in the neighboring ranch region of Bakeoven. It wasn’t until 1964 that the building was transported 9-miles up the highway to Shaniko to operate as the town’s only chapel. We are looking to revitalize the structure to bring joy to the community.

Breathing new life into the Chapel opens up the opportunity to share it with visitorswe are excited to invite music teachers into the Shaniko Chapel to offer free workshops to young musicians. The acoustics are fabulous, and given that the chapel was originally a schoolhouse, it is perfectly prepared for classes!
